Non-Surgical Gum Therapy in Red Deer, Alberta

Gum disease is an oral affliction impacting many Canadians. In fact, chances you may have it, but don’t know it yet. Common symptoms of gum disease include inflamed or bleeding gums, receding gums, and loose teeth.

If your gum disease is in its early stages, such as during gingivitis, it can be stopped or even reversed with good oral hygiene. However, if it’s more serious, we may recommend non-surgical gum therapy. This involves a variety of techniques, including curettage, root planning, and local medication.

As a first step, local medication may be administered into the infected gum sites to prevent the further spread of the infection.

Curettage removes the infected soft tissues surrounding the tooth. By removing the infected soft tissues, we’re allowing new healthy tissues to heal and grow.

Root planning removes and smoothes tiny amounts of the root surface. This process ensures the surface is clean and bacteria free.

These procedures are often performed together by one of our skilled hygienists. Also, because gum disease progresses slowly, we may have to have follow-up sessions to ensure your treatments are successful. Depending on the severity of your condition, we may recommend a periodontist should a surgical intervention be required. Contact us at Southpointe Dental in Red Deer to set up an appointment today.
